Sospesi
Un popolo alla deriva, tra cantieri e tralicci, pali della luce e ripetitori telefonici, sospesi sopra il proprio mare di problemi, distratti e divertiti.
Il riferimento non è propriamente al popolo italiano, che pure ne è il soggetto, ma più ampiamente a tutte le popolazioni occidentali, che mentre il sistema collassa, vivono in una quotidianità incantata.
Di tanto in tanto qualcuno osserva l’orizzonte o emerge dal fluttuare della marea, ma alla fine la preoccupazione maggiore è che il cellulare “prenda” la linea e che si giochi il campionato di calcio.
Sotto una luce accecante, le figure che popolano i quadri, emergono e si stagliano in un azzurro e rassicurante cielo estivo, a volte come sirene mitologiche, altre come statue su un piedistallo, ma nel grande mare che si protende all’orizzonte appaiono sempre piccole e inermi.
Sospesi (Hanging). A people adrift, between building sites and pylons, lampposts and cell towers, hanging over their own seas of problems, either preoccupied or having fun.
Subject of these works is not just the Italians (even though the pictures were taken in Italy), but in general all the western peoples who, while the system is collapsing, keep living their entranced everyday existence.
Occasionally someone glances at the horizon, or emerges from the floating tide, but eventually everybody’s main concerns are that their mobile phones get good cell reception and that the football championship is played.
Under a blinding light, the figures populating these pictures emerge and stand out in a blue and reassuring summer sky, similar sometimes to mythological sirens, other times to statues on a pedestal, while in the wide sea stretching on the horizon they always seem small and helpless.
